Welcome to WiCS!

Women in Computer Science (the official ACM-W chapter at Johns Hopkins) is a support group and professional resource for women/non-binary individuals in computing.

Check out our guide below to learn more and get involved!

Quick Guide

expand_more 0 Hello World

Women in CS (WiCS) is for women/non-binary indiduals, as well as other underrepresented groups in tech (and allies!), who are involved in CS—whether it’s major, minoring, or seriously considering majoring/minoring.

We focus on:

  • forming friendships
  • helping you find internships and jobs
  • providing a welcoming place to both work and hang out (and eat!)

Our events often include:

  • company tech talks/workshops
  • movie nights
  • dinners with WiCS alumni
  • breakfast study sessions
  • student-led workshops/talks

and always include:

  • Coding Circle, a weekly meeting (Friday, Malone 107, 4:30pm) with snacks, nail polish, and playing cards. We’ll discuss the Topic of the Week (“internship hunting,” “group project tips”) and also just hang out and unwind
  • Our mentorship program, where we pair underclassmen and upperclassmen based on their interests. Mentors get to share their experiences and offer advice; mentees get to ask questions and receive helpful tips; and everyone gets to meet new people and participate in fun bonding events. Sign-ups are in the winter/spring and for active members only!

expand_more 1 Be in the Loop

Three main things:

  • join our Facebook group, where we post about WiCS events
  • join our mailing list, where we forward job/internship opportunities and info on relevant events
  • join our Slack channel, where we chat informally and send out reminders about events and opportunities

You can also (but don’t have to):

  • like our Facebook page, where we post photos from events and announce WiCS Members of the Month
  • follow our Instagram, where we post photos and reminders for upcoming events
  • check out the department page, which links to some additional general resources

expand_more 2 Be a Member

Everyone is welcome to join our group/mailing list and attend our general events, but members get:

  • membership status (if you like bragging rights), plus their name on our website
  • access to our database of resources (for internships, scholarships, etc.)
  • access to the ACM lounge (Malone Hall, G67)

Active members additionally get:

  • invites to exclusive company events
  • our spring mentorship program (you must be an active member in the preceding fall)

To become a member of WiCS, come to three of our events. During/after your third event, let the chair or vice chair know and one of them will add you to our site and give database/lounge access.

To remain an active member, come to at least two events each semester. (Remind the chair or vice chair during/after your second event to make sure your name is on the active members list for the current semester!)

expand_more 3 About ACM

Membership in WiCS automatically grants you membership in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the other undergraduate CS organization on campus.

Note: ACM is a more “general CS” group (less discussion of interview tips, workplace environments, etc. and more speakers, including our CS faculty, who talk about specialized fields).

WiCS and ACM collaborate on a ton of events, including:

  • joint workshops and/or tech talks
  • special celebrations, like Ada Lovelace’s birthday party and Pi Day
  • fun hangouts, like Game of Thrones viewing parties

To stay up-to-date, check out our Events resources. And feel free to ask our WiCS boards about ACM!
